Right from your arrival at the Unterschwarzachhof in Hinterglemm, you sense an anticipation of Christmas that you haven’t experienced for a long time. Christmas is just around the corner, the hotel is festively decorated, and the smell of freshly baked biscuits pervades the hotel.
The run-up to Christmas at the Unterschwarzachhof
You can really feel the magic of Christmas in the fairytale, snow-covered winter scenery in the Glemmtal region. The smell of gingerbread, cinnamon, biscuits, and Glühwein wafts through the hotel whilst the Kinderclub resembles a Christmas workshop, with children enthusiastically making and decorating wonderful Christmas stars and presents for mum and dad. The children want to have everything ready before the time comes to join the torchlit walk or go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride with their parents through the deep snow in the head of the valley.
When making Christmas cookies together, little children’s hands often get full of pastry, and they get icing sugar all over their faces, but that’s all part and parcel of making home-made “Vanillekipferln” and “Linzeraugen” to take home for granny and grandpa.
An atmospheric season of Advent for all ages
Before Christmas, the pistes of Saalbach Hinterglemm are especially attractive. It is an indescribable feeling to make your tracks in this wonderful winter landscape when the pistes lie practically untouched in front of you. This is why many like to enjoy the freshly prepared pistes at this time of year in the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. Then, as it starts to get dark early in the evening, join Toni, the manager, on a torchlit walk-through romantic, tranquil winter scenery. Hot Glühwein and children’s punch await you in front of the hotel, there are sweet chestnuts roasting on the open fire, and the smell of baked apple is in the air.
The Christmas markets in the surrounding area are certainly worth visiting. Their lovingly decorated huts display works of craftsmanship, Pinzgau specialities and delights, and invite guests to stay a while. If you fancy an atmospheric evening, then visit the Christmas concert given by the traditional town band in the parish church of Saalbach.
Christmas at the Unterschwarzachhof
And then it arrives, the long awaited Christmas. In the hotel, the large Christmas tree is festively decorated and all the bustle is a sure sign that something special is planned. The children can scarcely wait until Father Christmas finally arrives. In the evening, Toni and Thomas carry out the tradition of going through the house and farm with incense to bless it and pray for protection – The night before Christmas is one of the most important “Raunächte”.
After the evening meal, Jacky, Toni, Thomas and Antonia Hasenauer join guests and staff at the Christmas tree with Christmas cookies and punch. Families, couples, and individuals all feel welcome and part of the celebrations. The Christmas story is read out, Antonia plays her harp, and sometimes there is even a nativity play. There is a really special, festive atmosphere in the room. Then, the lights are dimmed and the light from the candles on the Christmas tree reflects in the eyes of the children. Whilst sparklers spray out their sparks, everyone joins in together to sing the carol “Silent night” and presents are given to the children, brought by Father Christmas himself on a horse or in a horse-drawn sleigh, in his red cloak and with his white beard. People hug their loved ones and everyone wishes each other a Happy Christmas and enjoys a lovely time together. Those who want to can retire to their own family suite to celebrate their personal Christmas with family, but many stay on to enjoy the lovely evening together with lots of people, and continue to celebrate a meaningful, festive Christmas.
At midnight, the Hasenauer family visit the “Christmette” midnight mass in the parish church of Saalbach; anyone who wants to is very welcome to join them.
The next morning, Christmas Day, the children proudly show their presents to each other at the breakfast table, overjoyed at the visit of Father Christmas. The adults enjoy a sumptuous Christmas breakfast in peace in this Christmas idyll and a stress-free time with the family, without having to worry about anything.
Pinzgau Advent in Salzburger Land
Advent, the time before Christmas, is a time when traditions and crafts in Salzburger Land add extra special charm. Beautiful gifts such as Christmas tree baubles, hand-knitted socks, fine wood-carvings and toys are offered amongst the smell of Glühwein, roasted chestnuts, and Christmas cookies. Brass bands, choirs, and nativity plays all add to the Advent atmosphere in the run-up to Christmas.
Traditional events such as the “Krampuslauf”, the “Tresterer” and the “Perchten”, crib displays, and Advent carol singing with nativity plays contribute to the feeling of anticipation before Christmas, and we all know that anticipation is a joy in itself.
The nicest Christmas markets in the region:
- Christkindlmarkt Salzburg on the Domplatz
- Hellbrunner Advent
- Zeller Adventzauber in Zell am See
- Leoganger Bergwerksadvent
- Wallfahrt Advent in Maria Alm
- Adventmarkt Saalfelden
It therefore comes as no surprise that many regard the Unterschwarzachhof, a place in which they feel very well looked after, as their second home in the season of Advent and at Christmas.
